Pallet Wrap to Rubbish Bag: NZ Closed-Loop Recycling

Our Best Purple Recycled Bags start life as pallet wrap in our warehouses.

Goods move through our warehouses wrapped in pallet wrap. Once the pallet is unwrapped, that plastic is usually thrown away. We decided to keep it, and turn it into the rubbish bags you use.

Best Purple Recycled Bags production process: collect, compact, convert, create, pack, deliver

Step 1: We collect the pallet wrap

Used pallet wrap is collected from our warehouses and compacted into 60kg blocks. Compacting makes it practical to move.

Step 2: It travels to Palmerston North

The blocks go to a recycling plant in Palmerston North. There the plastic is cleaned, melted and reformed into new film.

Step 3: It becomes a purple bag

The film is made into rubbish bags, in purple so nobody has to ask whether you’re using recycled bags. The colour tells them. The finished bags are made from 100% recycled plastic, a mix of post-consumer and post-industrial used pallet wrap.

Step 4: It comes back to us

The bags are bundled, boxed and sent back to Hygiene Direct. We deliver them to you, and when we do, we collect your used pallet wrap. It goes back into the loop, and the cycle starts again.

Why it matters

Making bags in New Zealand from plastic that was already here keeps the material in the country and in use, rather than in landfill. It also supports local industry. It’s recycling in New Zealand, for New Zealanders.

If your business uses Best Purple, you also receive a Certificate of Positive Environmental Impact to display. It shows customers and staff that your environmental policy is backed by action.
