The Morning After: Cleaning Up After Hotel Events and Functions

NZ hotels are leaning into events. As Hotel Magazine reports, CP Accor's Auckland properties have lined up a full Halloween programme. HI-SO Rooftop Bar is hosting a costume party with cocktails, DJs and drag performances. Pullman Auckland is running a pumpkin-painting session for kids. JO&JOE is welcoming a costumed run club back for breakfast and coffee.

Events like these bring locals in, fill bars and build a hotel's reputation. They also leave a mess. And straight after Halloween comes Christmas function season, the busiest stretch of the year for hotel event spaces.

The guest arriving at 9am doesn't care what happened at midnight. Here's how to get event spaces back to standard, fast.

1. Start with a walk-through

Before anyone picks up a mop, walk the space. Note spills, stains, damage and anything left behind. Prioritise guest-facing areas first: entrances, lifts, corridors and washrooms. Bar floors and back-of-house can follow.

2. Clear rubbish and empty bins fast

Bottles, food scraps and decorations break down quickly and create odours. Get everything bagged and out to bin storage as soon as possible. Then deal with the bin area itself. See our guide to waste and bin storage odour control [LINK: Bin storage post].

3. Tackle spills and stains while they're fresh

  • Carpet spills (drinks, food): Blot, don't rub. Rubbing pushes the stain deeper and spreads it. Then use a suitable carpet spotter from our commercial cleaning chemicals range.
  • Large wet spills: A wet/dry commercial vacuum lifts liquid out of carpet and off hard floors far faster than mops and towels.
  • Paint and craft mess: For kids' activities, use washable paints and cover tables before you start. Prevention is far cheaper than removal.
  • Sticky hard floors: Sugary drinks leave residue that attracts dirt. A neutral floor cleaner and a proper mop-and-bucket system will cut through it without damaging the finish.

4. Restore the floors

After spot-cleaning, vacuum carpets thoroughly with a reliable commercial vacuum, then mop hard floors. Check your entrance matting too. After a big night it's often saturated and needs vacuuming or changing so it can keep trapping grit for the next day's guests.

5. Neutralise odours, don't mask them

The smell of spilled drinks, food and crowds lingers in carpet, furnishings and bins long after the party ends. Spraying fragrance over the top only adds another smell.

An odour neutraliser breaks down the source of the smell instead of covering it. Xit Odour Destroyer [LINK: Xit Odour Destroyer] is a non-hazardous, biodegradable neutraliser that suits bars, function rooms, washrooms and bin areas. 6. Reset the washrooms

Event washrooms take a hammering. Clean and disinfect every fixture, restock paper and soap, and check dispensers are working. For more on keeping high-traffic washrooms fresh, see how to control odours in commercial washrooms [LINK: Washroom odours post].

7. Don't forget glass and high-touch surfaces

Doors, handrails, lift buttons, bar tops and glass balustrades collect fingerprints and sticky residue. A good glass cleaner and a quality squeegee from our cleaning equipment range leave a streak-free finish.

8. Restock before the next event

The worst time to discover you're out of bin liners or carpet spotter is halfway through a clean-up. Keep an event kit stocked and check it after every function.
