Cleaning Tool Storage and 5S: Wall Brackets Guide
Cleaning Tool Storage: 5S, Wall Brackets and the Vikan Hi-Flex System
A colour-coded tool stored in the wrong place is worse than an unmarked one, because it looks like it belongs. Good storage keeps each tool in its zone, off the floor, dry and easy to check. It is half of any colour-coded cleaning system.
Why storage matters
Tools left on floors, benches or in buckets pick up dirt, stay wet and go missing. Vikan notes that proper tool storage extends tool life and reduces the cost of replacing damaged or lost tools. It also makes your hygienic zoning plan visible: a wall of green tools means that zone has what it needs.
5S and cleaning tools
5S is a lean method for keeping a workplace organised. Applied to cleaning tools, it looks like this:
- Sort. Remove tools you don't use or that are damaged.
- Set in order. Give every tool a fixed place, in its zone.
- Shine. Clean tools and storage as part of the routine.
- Standardise. Use the same layout and colours in every zone.
- Sustain. Check regularly and fix drift quickly.
Vikan designs its colour-coded range to support hygienic zoning plans and 5S lean programmes, and its wall brackets are built for the same purpose. R.D. Wells also supplies 5S shadow boards and picture-plate location rails in ANZ, as listed on its Vikan hygiene system page.
Vikan Hi-Flex wall bracket system
The Hygienic Hi-Flex Wall Bracket System is a modular wall bracket that gives a flexible way to store cleaning tools anywhere on site. According to Vikan:
- The 420 mm rail slides onto four wall mounts from the left or right.
- Grip band modules and hook modules click onto the rail and lock into small notches, so they don't slide sideways.
- You can fit 1 to 10 modules: up to 5 grip bands or up to 10 hooks.
- Each grip band holds tools with a 28-33 mm diameter. Each hook holds up to 3 kg.
- The system comes with 3 grip band modules and 2 hooks.
- Modules and rails come apart easily for cleaning or replacement.
It is made in Denmark from polypropylene, TPE rubber and polyamide, and comes in 12 colours to match your zones.
Single and double hook modules
For tools with a hanging hole, Vikan's hygienic hook modules fit the same system or work on their own. The single hook module (41 mm) holds one tool. The double hook module (82 mm) holds one or two tools, including tools with a D- or T-shaped handle. Each holds up to 3 kg and slides off for cleaning.
Toolflex rails
Vikan's Toolflex tool holder rail is a simple wall-mounted system for storing tools with Vikan handles. The 350 mm and 500 mm rails take rubber clips and hooks in the same colours, so you can match storage to a zone. Choose the rail length for your wall space, then add the clips and hooks that suit your tools.
Tips for good tool storage
- Put storage inside each zone, not in a shared corridor.
- Match the colour of the bracket to the colour of the tools.
- Hang tools so brush heads and blades don't touch the wall or each other.
- Store tools clean and dry. Tools with drop-shaped hanging holes drain without liquid pooling.
- Leave a gap or marker for each tool, so a missing one is obvious.
