What Does Franchise Head Office Actually Do? | Hygiene Direct

What does head office actually do for a franchisee?

There's an old saying in franchising: a franchise lets you be in business for yourself, but not by yourself. The cover story of the latest Franchise New Zealand magazine is about exactly that idea. It covers what the "power of a franchise" really means for someone going from a job to owning a business.

The magazine lists what a good franchisor gives you: buying power with suppliers, a brand customers already trust, training, ongoing support, and research into new products while you focus on customers. It points out that group buying power affects your margins every single day, on everything from products to IT to insurance.

So it's a fair question to ask any franchisor: what exactly will head office do for me?

The "What have the Romans ever done for us?" test

The same issue reprints a well-loved parody. A group of unhappy franchisees complain about their franchisor until someone lists what it has actually done for them: the name, the training, the systems, the buying power, the support and the marketing. They also admit that none of them knew the industry when they started.

It's a good reminder. Much of a franchise's value is the work you never see, done behind the scenes so you don't have to do it.

Where most small business owners get stuck

Ask anyone who has run a small business where their time goes, and you'll hear about admin: ordering stock, chasing invoices, managing suppliers, keeping the website running. That's time not spent with customers, and customers are what grow the business.

How Hygiene Direct does it differently

We built our franchise model around one idea: you focus on customers, and we do much of the rest.

As a Hygiene Direct franchisee, your job is to meet business owners, build relationships, win new customers and look after the ones you have. Head office supports you with:

  • Purchasing, importing and the cost of stock
  • Warehousing and distribution
  • Customer service
  • Website, online ordering, SEO and digital marketing
  • National supplier relationships
  • Billing and invoicing
  • Product sourcing and marketing support
  • Ongoing sales training

This is the buying power the magazine describes, applied to something every business needs: toilet paper, paper towels, soap, cleaning chemicals, bin liners and washroom products. These aren't luxury purchases. They're everyday essentials.

Support without the ongoing royalty bill

In the parody, one franchisee's main gripe is the royalty and advertising levy taken off the top. At Hygiene Direct, there are no ongoing royalty fees, and the upfront investment is kept deliberately low. You keep earning from the customers you build.

You also aren't boxed into a small territory. If you win a regional or national customer, you get the reward.

Not by yourself

Every new franchisee gets hands-on mentoring in their first months, plus full training. You don't need experience in the cleaning industry. The people who do best with us are the ones who enjoy meeting people and helping them.

We live by the Māori proverb He waka eke noa: we are all in this canoe together.
